Sorry, its been a long day. How to measure what you want may make more sense to me tomorrow morning.
It doesn't make sense to me to try to measure the composite SG of a rock in that standard way I described because the air component of the rock can migrate out of it when you immerse it in water. If the rock is permeable enough, that will happen (permeable sandstones were some of the earliest water filters).
