Let us say that the stone weighs 8 ounces suspended in air and 5 ounces suspended in water. Then the stone has displaced 3 ounces of water. So the same volume of stone that weighed 8 ounces is the same volume of water that weighed 3 ounces. The specific gravity is 8/3 = 2.67. The beauty of this method is that you don't have to know or calculate the volume at all.

The stones do not absorb appreciable water.
