absolutely, even yellow pine, which behaves more like half soft wood with bars of half hardwood between them (as in, it's not ideal) works well for this. Even cherry would be fine.
The hard bars in yellow pine probably make the big scratches more aggressive, without even considering that my buffing bar is filthy and could have metal pieces on it (something the buffer doesn't care about, but a hardwood lap would).
