This stone has a light gray spot running through it, which made it a second, which made it affordable. The gray spot has no pores, so it doesn't affect use. Dan's seconds are better than other sellers' firsts, at least when bought from the website.

It's been hard to get them, though, and the price has gone from being 2/3rds or so of firsts to a lot close.

This is a great stone, as good as any black stone I've ever seen and finer than most.

(I managed to haggle with a retailer and get a giant 10x3 of one of these first quality for a little bit of a discount for razors but have to admit I haven't used it much - arkansas stones' pressure sensitivity makes them a great razor stone).
