This approach works beautifully with chisels (fist time and every time since) but gives me fits on plane blades. I followed DW's explanatory Vidjayo which repeatedly mentions angular momentum and sharp steel can lead to jugular indentum.

I'm trying to shorten the time between "Time to make the donuts" and Bazinga! sharp.

I know it can be done because I have an example on hand.

Doing it myself has proven difficult, and my hands do what I tell them to do.
(Which might well be the problem.)

If you can't swing a freehand pass on the buffer, can you clamp the blade to a wood "paddle" and raise that to the wheel?

Keeping a grip is hard enough without crossed wires complicating things.
