Forgot!! I think you mentioned before that you have a felt wheel around somewhere...

on a hand crank grinder, it may be a better idea. A cotton buff is an enormous energy pig at high speed. The tool doesn't get that hot, the buff doesn't get that hot, but it probably consumes "full on bicycle pedal power". the heat must get dissipated into the air from the buff.

But felt is much stronger cutting (more efficient) and would probably be a good match to a hand crank grinder where you also have much more control over speed.
