I did test a chisel stropped at a high angle. Short version: it held up almost as well as the buffed chisel. It's possible that different/better technique could equal the buffed blade, but I don't know for sure. David Weaver and Steve Voigt noted that in their experience, strops get contaminated over time and that can cause small defects in the edge, but that may matter only if you're using the tool for visible finish surfaces.
