Another note on the iron I used is that it is almost used up and I had just replaced it with a v-11 iron as I suspected it was starting to get very soft and would to hold an edge. I suspect it was very close to where the heat treat had stopped.

This is such a valuable shortcut to getting an amazing edge on both plane and chisel. You have done us all a valuable service sharing it. I am glad to use it and confirm its utility.
