The motor armature has vastly more mass than the wheels, and there is no belt to slip like a clutch. Granted it is closer to the rotation axis, but I think it is the bulk of the KE.

As to the wheel being grabby, I've not used the kind you guys are using often enough to have a feel for it. I am exceedingly careful with my flap sander wheel though, as it can grab. Probably no one is going to be foolish enough to buff with the edge up on the wheel, as we grind, but you never know. Buffers and grinders are sneaky hazards like the drill press.

The foot switch is a great solution, often seen in industry for many machines. I've formed the habit of clamping things down or to a fence and not use excessive pressure on steel and aluminum parts.
