..and these tall mortise chisels with long primaries were used often in production work, the second edge retention test shown above (monstrously less effort to use a bevel of this profile vs. a flat bevel) may go far in explaining why such a tool would come from the maker with a fat unicorn bevel or a long bevel necessitating the user apply a fat bevel.
The roundover on them is nice both in rotation and also just because the height of the profile is so tall that it's nice not to have it catch on the edge of a mortise.
The debate about whether or not the pigstickers were used bevel down or straight into the mortise rages on (I use them bevel down - they'd have a lot more friction in the mortise cutting if the full bevel was ridden on them, especially on the early ones that had soft iron backing instead of hardened steel through and through).
