Chromium oxide iii is very hard, but I understand it to be a little more round than most types of alumina. It makes a gentler edge on razors than comparable alumina or diamonds. That's probably the only way you could ever tell now that we've pretty well put to bed the idea that strong cutting small abrasives damage tool edges.
