I recall..with the #1 common cherry that I used for the last case, beveling only the quirk in the profile wasn't enough to eliminate tearout, but it does reduce it by preventing it from occurring starting within the quirk.

buffing the entire back (and rounding the quirk and bead profile entirely) completed the job.

I've noticed some irons on moulding planes prepared this way in the past and early on assumed it was due to poor sharpening. I've subsequently purchased a set of (matching griffiths) hollows and rounds where this intentional rounding over at the very edge was on all of them, the same from one to the next.

it still could be a matter of laziness, but maybe it was productive laziness.
