..I'm sure someone has tinkered with many ways to do this. Any time you fall into something so easily without necessarily looking for it, you know it's been done elsewhere (maybe in isolation, maybe in classes)
I haven't gotten it to work well with plane irons (in a way that doesn't expedite clearance issues), but what's missing is initiative to do that since they usually wear well from the start (vs. the small failure at the edge that plagues chisels).
Thanks for posting that you've seen something similar before. It's good confirmation that at least someone else with experience thought that it was not just workable, but workable enough to use over other things.
