You say that someone can’t do something, as an ad hominem argument. That shows a mean spirit, rather than a proof of your point. I let things like this go without comment ordinarily, but Larry is a genuinely good person and I can’t always let it go.

The double-iron is superior technology, on the subset of planes where it can be used (bench planes and supersurfacer). It is a productivity enhancer. It enables easier use of less than straight-grained wood. But some, if not the majority, of the most beautiful furniture was made prior to 1800. Somehow the makers of the day managed to try their boards and join their edges and smooth their surfaces, and did not consider their single-iron planes ‘useless’ for these tasks. Isn’t that a balanced view of the subject?

Todd Hughes made very telling arguments, always from fact, and none of them ad hominem.
