Re: Weaver grind—how is convexity added?

David Weaver
The result must be more important than the method. I did this for years on a fine stone and over time (with the benefit of trying so many stones) got to using a very slow finish stone from japan that says "barber's oilstone" on it.

The first effort was to stop chisels from chipping in mortising (including japanese chisels).

The buffer isn't and can't be essential as I didn't chance across it despite doing this for a while) until recently. I'd prefer a very slow fine stone otherwise, but leather stropping would work fine. If it's too slow, a slightly coarser polish would do it (like autosol instead of green chrome, etc) - autosol on leather is as fine as a 1 micron stone despite the alumina being something like 3 microns - it has much less conviction with the leather backing.

This picture from our prior discussion is the amount of shine (the last tiny white line) on a sorby chisel (almost worst possible case) that achieves the result of making the easy and early edge failure go away.

follow up sharpening becomes removing wear (warren just said something about that recently, too) rather than damage.
