Freehand grinding on a flat wheel *PIC*

David Gli
So a 1/4 inch thick piece of wood on the platform did the trick. Unfortunately, at least in my hands, freehand grinding on a flat wheel is less than ideal. I can make a very straight grind freehand on a crowned wheel, but not so much on the flat wheel. Because the grind wasn't straight, it took too long on the stones to get a nice edge due to the large flats. Not terribly long but not just a few strokes on 1000 and 8000 grit Shaptons. Since I do not have a crowned wheel set up right now , next time I need to resharpen this chisel, I think I will go back to a flat grind with a secondary bevel. Pics attached.

I would show a pic of the chisel cutting end grain radiata pine, bit I didn't have any. :)
