I think I recall from a class on inlay with Latta that what the English call sycamore is in fact a maple and close to our "soft maple". It looked to me like soft maple. We used it for "white" inlay as a substitute for more expensive holly. It took bends easily but was not snow white like holly. I never used it again as a substitute for holly.

If my memory is correct and English Sycamore is maple and like out soft maple, it bears no resemblance to the wood from American Sycamore, other than it is soft.
