Warren, thanks much for the illustration and for your measurements. It's very helpful to have a starting point based on concrete, practical experience. Not sure when I'll get around to this, but I'm sure I'll have more questions then. Oh, and on the length--4 feet sounds good to me. My timbers are around 5', so I'll be lucky to get 4' between centers.
