The chest I showed is Chester County around 1770.

Years ago my instincts would have been to make through dovetails and cover with moulding. I now prefer this traditional method [half blinds]. For one thing, you don't have to flush off the sides. So you don't have to worry about smooth planing after gluing or having the flushing off mess up the flatness. It is smoothed before gluing, which is much easier. If the top is not visible,you don't have to flush at all.

On some cases you have to use half blind dovetails at the bottom anyway because they would otherwise be exposed. It is probably more precise to have the same treatment top and bottom.
