I may make the mallets square head, actually the face would be angled and the top and bottom curved. I have some of these and they are good mallets. I do not have a lathe right now so I would have to buy one to make round mallets.

A round mallet has the same striking face no matter how you turn it. Applying it directly to the chisel instead of a glancing blow is a simple matter of hand eye coordination. It is very easy to do instinctually. I just find it easier to hit a direct blow with a round mallet than a square one.
