Two animals... () Warren in Lancaster, PA
Years ago someone on this forum introduced a sharpness test that involved newsprint. Bill Tindall admitted that his plane irons could not pass this test, but that it did not matter since the initial sharpness would not last beyond four feet of planing. He said "Let's hear from the newsprint cutters."
I tried it. It is a pain in the neck planing a bit, then taking the plane apart to see if it passes et cetera. After several rounds of this and forty feet of planing, it still passed the test, but I could notice some deterioration. It was probably still sharper than Bill had without any planing. It is really wrong to assume that anyone who goes through the motions is getting equal results sharpening.
