There's the exploration of commonplace technology that is complex, and the deliberately complicated cash extraction schemes at play in that observation.
We have a swing bridge nearby that quietly passes trawlers and trailers alike - in continuous operation since 1900. Nobody notices this marvel unless it's taken out of service for maintenance. Perhaps most (today) would view wireless communication the same way and only notice if "the bridge is out".
I think of things like the pencil as a perfect manifestation of an idea that everyone adopted - few objects achieve this status. It requires little demonstration for use - functions in most any conditions, and most anyone can afford one.
