I'm not sure who their market for the gadgets is, either, but I'm assuming some apple store employees may be involved.
Not to paint with such a broad brush, but there are a few in my neighborhood who have too much dopamine. Everything is always great, but there's not a lot of depth when I talk to them. The kind of folks who would have no problem telling someone to get a new $3200 computer because somehow, $100 in parts would equate to a $2700 repair bill, and "it's just not fixing". Not because they're devious, but because lack of curiosity prevents them from being as cynical as me.
This kind of thing would be right down their alley (though the chopstick maker would fit better).
For me, though, the challenge of making a pencil as good as a 40 cent pencil for 40 cents of materials is a real draw.
The world of tombow monos or 8900s, mitsubishis, etc, all sublime writing pencils that surpass every mechanic pencil I've had for feel. The blackwings are a step up yet, with thought in every detail - the ferrule, the lacquer, the shape, the feel of the lead, the quality of the cedar. Sometimes that's lost among the complainers who can't see the difference between them and the 40 cent pencil. Unless I get lucky with lead making, I don't think I'll ever be able to come close to equaling them. I can make the case, but the drafting leads are that step down from the exercise in perfection that is the leads in the blackwings.
