I'm not sure what "temper the box" means, but what I do is plug in the steamer and leave the door to the box open. Once steam starts coming out of the door I place the object to be steam bent into the box and close it. That way I get an accurate time for how long the piece was under steam. I also have a thermometer inserted in the top of the box to let me know when the inside of the box reaches top heat.
