I wonder how varying the size of the hexagonal shape would feel. I usually prefer larger handles for things, but I'm not sure about pencils, since that size and shape is so familiar.
I wonder if it might work to make a sheet of several pencils, and then cut them apart with a 60 degree V-groove plane (halfway through from each side) to form the hexagons.
