is the wedge a good fit? might have gotten the wrong/not original iron at some point?

If the iron mortise allows for setting the iron flush with the right side you could use it as it is, after making sure the sole is flat, and th reference sida as well. That is, as a skew rabbet plane. As for making grooves I don´tknow how well it works
