ain't easy knowing where the #5 sweep is if all the tool points are stuffed into the roll. Every carver I know uses a tool roll as Warren describes.

Much carving goes on for some duration with nothing else going on. So a tool roll occupying a lot of bench real estate is not a problem. I find chisels in a rack more useful as it occupies little space and they are equally handy. The sub set of chisels commonly used fits in a rack.

The carver that made the handsome secretary in the Gallery has two tool rolls to hold his carving tools. We recently scanned the points to select a sweep for the rice carving I needed.
