That's of mild interest because I'm slowly getting around to turning chess pieces, and if I do well, then I think very lightly finished pieces would be divine if the wood itself could be brought to a polish with the pores sealed to prevent cracking.

I have used metal polish on rosewood before, and i think Derek did the same. It does something interesting to the surface smoothing and darkening it, but depending on the polish, it can leave an undesirable oil based stink. So, I'm pondering smashing together some of my beeswax/mineral oil mix with alumina.
