two markets use alumina abrasives in submicron sizes- rock polishing and metal polishing. Searching lapidary supplies will yield sources as will companies that supply material for polishing metal, and metal specimens for metallurgy examination(which is where I used this stuff). It will be available as dry powder and as a suspension. A pint will be about $15. The problem will be finding a small enough quantity as powder. May have to get a pound and sell 95% of it on Ebay!

for example: http://metallographic.com/Technical/Fine%20abrasives.htm

www.metallographic.com/Brochures/alumina2.pdf

It appears that in both applications diamond has replaced other abrasives in these applications. I could not find anyone supplying chromium oxide for metal polishing. Makes me think wood workers are using it for historical reasons rather than effectiveness.
