Farm sayings about stingy.. () Wiley Horne
The old folks kept their farm ways, even when they moved to town. But mine didn’t have the concept of being cheap as a value judgment. In their world, you were either lazy or thrifty.
My maternal grandmother kept a big ball of string. She’d take the string off the newspaper (they weren’t plastic wrapped in those days) and add it to the big ball o’ string. She sewed everything on her treadle Singer, which I don’t recall ever getting motorized, and all off cuts ended up being made into hook rugs, made with crochet tools, or quilts. Maybe it’s all still alive in farm country.
