Yes, there are uses for three cornered dovetailed boxes. The first one that crossed my mind is a flag box. My wife has one, but it is not dovetailed, so useless for this discussion.

This is a hat box for a tricorn hat, owned by the Chester County Historical Society.

I wish I had gotten better pictures of the dovetailed joints. You can see it if you visit their museum in West Chester, PA. I'm pretty sure Bill has been there, researching Line and Berry. They have an extraordinary collection of Pennsylvania spice boxes.

I suspect 60° dovetail corners are easier than 45° corners, even if the concepts are very similar.
