The substantial advantage of sheet abrasive is the opportunity to proceed with small steps in particle size so that only a few strokes are necessary on each grit size. Much faster than using 2-3 stones of widely spaced particle size.

This makes no sense to me, and I've done it both ways. I can freehand a chisel on stones in less than a minute when all cylinders are firing, and I don't consider myself particularly fast. I'd guess most sandpaper users would be hard pressed to install and remove the chisel from the sharpening jig in that amount of time.
