Another advantage of the sandpaper method is that it provides beginners with an inexpensive way to get started.

That is why our club stocked the necessary stuff so it was easy for people to start. Easy to start, high probability of success. The method provides a reference when trying other means of sharpening. I still keep two 12 x 12 plates loaded with a progression of paper because I still use this technique for some tasks.

We should be encouraging woodworkers to start by promoting cheap and easy to learn techniques, and then mentor growth in whatever direction they choose.
