..years ago, I saw eddie castellin (sp?) put up a recipe for something he called "sanding wax". It's just 50/50 beeswax/mineral oil.

It is only slightly softer than a toilet ring. Stick the screw tip in it just a little and there's plenty. I like to think that on the planes that I've made with screws in them that one day, maybe they'll come apart a little easier and oxidize a little less.

But that probably won't happen - that wax probably gets drawn into the surrounding grain until there's no useful concentration left.
