And your experiment with the block at the back is interesting - people often think it's Wrong to deviate from the historical models, but it sounds like you've found a solution that works for what you do in the shop.

My cleanliness problem in the shop comes from a few things: I often have several projects around the house going at once, so the parts and materials for the project wind up on the bench; what I thought was urgent yesterday suddenly falls down the list, replaced by new, surprise urgencies; and, at the end of the day, when it's time to close up, I don't allow enough time to put things back, so they get piled on the bench. I think I need a valet or maid or someone like that.
