Purpleheart and holly are quite different beasts, but I'll give the WD-40 a try. It is a lot slipperier than a lot of other lubes I've tried, and I have used it before on bandsaw blades. It is more volatile than wax, and the sawing creates a lot of heat, but I don't know if overall that is an advantage or a disadvantage.
