Thanks for the info on files; I've never tried the Simmons. I've also never used a Vixen on steel, though I often use them on brass. I'll have to try that.
Btw, I smiled at your comment "I like filing like I like planing." Same here. There is so much more to it than just pushing the file over metal.
I'm curious though, if you've tried threading a hacksaw blade through the keyhole (setting it on the 45° pins) and cutting away part of the waste between holes. I would think that would be faster (but then I've never made an iron this way so i don't really know).
