How about wrapping a substantial thread, cord or twine on the handle portion? Now that would look nice! I'm picturing a black cord, maybe 1/16" shy diameter, nicely wrapped. You've got to do the ends properly, so they look nice. There's a simple trick to doing them, called whipping. Maybe add a contrasting band of gray near the ends. Finish with black at top and bottom. You could even dual wind the gray and black threads together for the middle. Now THAT would be quite classy! And provide a good grip...

Actually, doing all those variations is pretty easy. Do you still live in NJ? If so, and if you have the time, come over to my shop and I can show you how it's done. Even with two or more colors! I do it all the time on bows...
