Thanks, Larry - you say they're similar in the ray plane and the ring plane when wet. Does it change at all when dry?
I don't know if it's universally true, but one of the things that I think makes cherry and beech easier to plane perpendicular to the rays is that the early wood tears some. If it tears a lot, then it takes a fine set to get a decent surface.
