Heart thrown away.Response To:

When we say that the heart is thrown away, we are generally talking about the wood near the center of the tree that has rings with small radius, higher proportion of knots, juvenile wood, etc. Not that all the heartwood is thrown away.
On a large log, the wood that is three to five inches from the center is the "heart". The higher quality portion of the log could still be mostly heartwood.
