same, but details different, and a question

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
Anyone that uses a crowned wheel will understand your description. Some details differ. I use 1/2 x 7" wheels because I use inexpensive surface grinder wheels.(Radiac at lest used to make whatever you wanted in 20 lot batches) I wind up grinding on about 3/8" of the width, which is determined entirely by the depth of the hollow in my case.

If sliding the flat tool back and forth on a tool rest, I can't use any more of the wheel width than what nestles in the hollow, so long as I keep the tool flat on the rest. So, the part I don't understand is how one can use the edges of a 1" wide wheel that is crowned. Are you not using a tool rest?

And agree it is easy to teach. I showed a machinist who ground metal working tools and he proceeded to grind his thin Stanley blade uneventfully, 1st try. I have showed lots of people in the club and all have been successful, even the lady that stuck her finger into the wheel to "see if it was spinning" (left a trail of blood to the first aid station). As one's soft touch becomes refined the need for the coolest slower cutting wheel becomes less. I support the suggestion that learning on a slow speed grinder will be easier, as well as it is fast enough, if the grinder is dedicated and not a multitasker.

My marketing talent has been shown to be near useless, but I'll still suggest that a less expensive 1/2" wheel might result in more sales.
