some heat calculations ()

Could the additional thermal mass of a closely set chip breaker make a significant difference in the rate of heat transfer from the edge, and therefore in the possible loss of hardness of some steels?

If so, could choosing a more thermally conductive steel for the chip breaker result in longer edge retention? Might it even make sense to use a copper or copper clad, or even a silver plated chip breaker?

If the above questions result in improved edge retention, would it also decrease the likelihood of an inexperienced sharpener losing hardness if the chip breaker were left attached to the blade while grinding?
