I have the same question as Phil's.

i have colored M2 HSSS drill blanks while grinding them into turning tools without ruining the hardness. This was on a low speed grinder with the white wheel that came with the grinder. Since people I gave the tools to didn't necessarily know about that property of M2, I always cleaned off the colors with steel wool before giving them away.
