Re: Fear of heat- not an issue

Norton 3X wheels in I grade are excellent and when I was working with Norton to develop the wheels we thought "I" grade was all we needed. However turners hated the softness of the "I" grade because turning profiles would wear away the wheel very fast. So Norton introduced a "K" grade - much harder for those folks. As most turners use HSS there wasn't a real need to be as cool as there is for carbon steel.

The coarser the grit the cooler it will run. And as you are generally honing edge tools after grinding a coarse scratch pattern means nothing. So for friable wheels 60 and lower seems the choice.

With CBN because it runs so cool finer grits can be used (although it grinds slower).

Crowning the wheel makes a huge the difference for control and everything. Crowning is down with a wheel dresser on friable wheels. I think we are the only seller of crowned CBN wheels.

As I prefer a deep hollow I love my 6" 3600 rpm grinder. 8" makes more sense if you don't want a hollow grind as when turning. In any case with a CBN wheel, a crown, or a dressed friable wheel grinding to a wire edge should not be that tricky.

The major reason for upgrading stock grinder wheels is really to make the job easier. But with a properly dressed wheel you can grind to a wire edge on almost anything.
I don't like 3600 8" grinders because the extra speed buys me nothings - (a savings of a few seconds) but the risk of burning goes up. and of course I like my deep hollow.
