Re: Fear of heat () Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
Neighbor that does heat calculations for heating and cooling chemical equipment took a stab at seeing what the situation is at the tip of a plane blade. We have data from K&K that enable the work to be calculated, the volume of bade tip experiencing friction, mass of shaving etc. Forest products lab provides heat capacity and thermal conductivity of wood, so some estimates could be made. What came out is that the shaving needs to soak up substantial heat or the tip will be heated significantly. The K&K video show that the frictional forces are distributed well beyond the blade tip, which is fortunate for the tip. It was an interesting exercise with no exact answer.
