I used about half an inch of pink wheel per year. Albeit I am covering far more feet per year than most combined workers, as well as refurbishing and making a lot of planes.

If you lock a grinder down, you don't need balanced wheels. $20 brown Norton wheels walked my grinder around. Not essential but improved the experience with the baldor.

Just to see what they're like, I ordered a CBN Chinese wheel today for $50 shipped from Hong Kong and will see if it works with a house made bushing. I wouldn't mind putting the guard back on my machine on the shop side as my kids still are a liability in the shop.

At any rate, I was able to find camel wheels for $12, but buying another one for $30 isn't something I'd do again after having cbn for a while. I keep a brown coarse wheel on the machine for working annealed steel. I doubt many do that, but pink and cbn both aren't set up for that. I'd still point a beginner to cbn.
