All these problems aren't

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
Why are you offering Joel, who ever he is, as a source of wisdom? Joel, the "expert" in grinding cautions against a high speed grinder and advocates a 6" wheel. If Joel didn't talk about wheel composition and bond hardness in his teaching of how to grind tool steel (not to be confused with "high speed tool steel") he lacked the knowledge to teach the topic. I agree that slower speed is easier to learn on.

But the fact that many in our area that have been shown it works can grind successfully on my set up, or Phil Smith's, suggests that Joel lacked some knowledge or experience in the topic he taught. Maybe it would be best to listen to someone that isn't experiencing heat for advice on how to avoid it, inexpensively.

It is wonderful that the $100+ wheel on a $300+ Tormek doesn't heat or need camber. Neither does my $30 wheel on a grinder most have anyway for lawnmower blades and other uses. It is simply a matter of what one is willing to spend to put a hollow on a tool bevel. Both work fine.

I am not ignorant of the CBN wheel. I used one in a class. It offered no advantage over what I do, for what I do, so I saw no reason to spend a pile of money to own one.

CBN has two potential advantages for those that could benefit- doesn't shed grits, and shape stays the same with use without maintenance. Are there others? Don't cite cool for it offers no advantage for cool for those that know how to use conventional wheels.
