Re: Tormek: getting old wheel off

Wiley, you did well. And your set up looks good. I might go for that same wheel if I decide to renovate my Tormek (which needs a new case, as this is rusted away).

The solid alloy wheel has a large flat area on the side, and its advantage over the one you have (which is laminated) is the ability to flatten blade backs.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the standard Tormek wheel grinds at 220 grit, therefore a 200 grit wheel should be a little faster. The machine rotates at 90 rpm, and heat is not an issue. Water is unnecessary.

For turners, many combine 180 grit and 600 grit wheels on a bench grinder. Heat is created on the faster machines, but the blades tend to be HSS and impervious to this.

There is now also a diamond wheel for the Tormek, which has been produced by Tormek - it appears that they are recognising the threat to their machine, which has relied on burnless grinding, but at the expense of speed. At this slow speed, diamond grinding is safe, that is, the diamond should last as long as CBN. I wonder if we see a new generation of Tormek grinders built specifically for CBN or diamond?

Regards from Perth

Derek
