A few years ago I posted on smc about the exaggerated reverence to the shooting board nowadays. I got a lot of flak Then I searched in the many old books online about woordworking and found that the shootingboard was originally a device to help with mitering and being used in marquetry and such where they work with very thin and narrow stuff. Only late into the industrial revolution the shooting board seems to get more attention for bench work too.
Of course we knew all along that a handplane in the normal position is way more comfortable then laying it flat on its side...
