Hi Bill,
I hear you about commercial steel. Valid point, but the test with the Ward iron is valid to test the proposition. Not conclusive of course. I asked about the pre-planing pictures to see if the 5u iron had visibly more tooth than when sharpened to 1u.
I said 35 appears ‘near optimum for that iron on that steel’ because it had a 10% better result than the same test run on a more acute angle. I suppose one could hold out for 33.
